The making of 'Spirit Hunter' linocut print

The making of 'Spirit Hunter' linocut print

‘Spirit Hunter’ is a single colour linocut printed onto printed on 40gsm acid free Thai Mulberry paper with Cranfield Caligo safe wash oil-based ink. This print symbolises both the love and pain of pet ownership and is in memory of our much-loved black cat 'Magic'. This is a limited edition of 50 prints.

Like most of my prints the first stage was to draw out the design in my sketchbook. I kept the sketchbook drawing quite rough however and mostly as a measured line drawing so that it would be easy to transfer later. In order to help myself plan the exact balance of black and white in the print I also photographed the sketch and drew over it in the Apple iPad app, using Procreate.

Once the design was clarified, I copied the design over to my lino block and began to carve. I used a range of Pfiel carving tools, but especially my favourite the tiny 11/05.
